Den Den is a 10

The first day of classes isn’t complete without the dreaded icebreakers. In my marketing class, Hospitality Strategic Marketing, HOSP3053,with Professor Bagdan one of the questions asked was “What’s your favorite restaurant here in Providence?” One student said, “I really love Den Den.” and as a chorus of “ooos” and “I love it there too.” were whispered throughout the classroom, I knew I was missing out. Located on a bustling street filled with restaurants from all cultures, college students walking with friends, first dates, and an overall lively presence stands the white brick house like structure. The minimalist design of white and black draws you in, a stark detour from the aesthetic of the street.

If you are looking for over-the-top, friendly service, this restaurant is not for you. While good humored and efficient, the staff do not add much to the experience, almost invisible as you enjoy your meal. On entering, the restaurant matches its outside exterior, it is extremely sleek, modern, timeless, and industrial without being cold. The ambience is casual with natural light and warm overhead lighting used. The menu continues the minimalist theme. The restaurant identifies vegetarian and spicy items while having an entire section for their gluten free options. Simplistic, the menu is divided into five categories. Wine is the most populated drink category. They have one beer and one soju option and serve pepsi products. No mocktails or cocktails are offered.

We ordered the Fried Rice cake, Potato twister, and a medium Korean Fried Chicken with both Spicy and Soy Garlic sauce. The staple fair potato twister gets a sophisticated upgrade, served with creamy spicy dressing and lemon. The fresh lemon cuts through the greasiness of the potato and the spicy dressing brings smooth life to the crispy potato served on a skewer. The fried rice cakes are my personal favorite item, covered in a sticky sweet and sour sauce that packs a punch, topped with sesame seeds. The outside is impossibly crunchy with a soft sponge texture underneath that balances the intensity of the sauce. For the main event, the crunchiest fried chicken I have ever tasted, served with white radish to replenish the palate. The soy garlic is perfect for the non-spice lover, having umami savory notes throughout, the spicy version has layers of different spices without being overpowering, encouraging you to experience more in each bite.

Located on the Providence college students’ beloved Thayer Street, next to Brown University, metered street parking is available, there are also parking garages within walking distance available. The exact location is 182 Angell St. Providence, RI. The tucked away spot is open Monday through Sunday from 11:00am to 10:00pm and accepts all types of payment. To note, this establishment does not take part in tipping, meaning the prices, which are reasonable at about $20 an entree, are raised in order to provide the staff with a stable wage. This is an absolute must eat here in Providence!
