Fall 2025 Fashion Trends on Campus

Sept. 22 marked the first day of Fall for 2025. As we all come back to campus and the weather is getting colder, I am sure we are all wondering what will entail for our wardrobes, besides more layers. With social media platforms like Tik Tok, Instagram and Pinterest; there are so many different aesthetics, influences, and fashion trends. It gets harder to predict fashion trends when algorithms have diversified a lot of trends and aesthetics. So the fashion cycle is not as linear as they were pre-social media, especially amongst Gen Z and younger generations. However, there are some broader trends that we can predict going into the Fall. This Fall brings back a diverse and nostalgic blend of vintage trends with a modern twist; from boho to punk, preppy to skater there is something in these upcoming trends for everyone.

Some decades are making a comeback into the trend cycle from the ‘70s to the early 2000s.The most prevalent decades that are showing up are Y2K and the 2000s with layered jewelry, matching sets and chunky belts. We will also see some hints of ‘90s punk and prep getting popular with a casual laid back skater-esque style, carpenter pants, baggy jorts, sheer materials, cropped trenches, rugby shirts, silver and metallic accents and plaid prints. Some subtle pops of ‘80s fashion are also back in style for this fall like pops of bright colors and neons, sequins and oversized accessories. The decade that has had a large influence lately has been the ‘70s, with boho elements showing up through the spring and summer and now this fall. We will see the ‘70s influence in the form of maxi skirts, lace details, suede, faux fur and flowy blouses.

In the article “11 Major Fall Fashion Trends Our Editors Are Buying for 2025,” Glamour Magazine predicts that Zebra print will be emerging this fall, they also predict that purple will become the color of the season. According to Vogue and Glamour Magazines textures like lace, faux fur, sequins, suede, and sheer materials will be popular in the coming months. Vogue Magazine’s article “8 Key Fall 2025 Fashion Trends to Know and Shop,” also predicted that punk inspired elements would make their appearance this season such as leather, plaids, silver studded pieces and other chunky silver accents. Teen Vogue hinted in their article “5 Trendy Back-to-School Outfit Ideas to Keep in Rotation All Year Long,” that denim textures will be big this season as well, especially with the baggy skater styles that we have been seeing a resurgence of recently. A lot of variation of stripes have also been a staple in the media which will likely be carried into the fall season.

As for accessories, expect a lot of large chunky pendants and layered jewelry. Tights, especially those with bright pops of color or patterns have been on the rise in the media. A fun trend that has been featured in Vogue's fall trend predictions and in the media recently have been men’s ties worn across all genders as ties, belts or scarves. Large slouchy bags have been on the up and up as well. Some other specific pieces that have been predicted to be on the rise for fall are barn jackets, maxi skirts, cropped trench coats, jorts, carpenter pants, oversized shirts and hoodies. Glamour stated that this is the season of “Slouch meets structure.” Which seems very apparent as we see baggier skater styles and loose 70s silhouettes get mixed with spiky punk elements, 90s structured prep and bold pops of 80s color.

So, how should Johnson and Wales students prepare for the transition into fall fashion? Firstly, these trends are all about mixing and matching aesthetics and experimenting with trends from decades of the past. Comfort is key, especially on a college campus; the baggy oversized fits and functional but fun layers allow for a lot of room for comfort and style to co-exist. Overall, personal expression is the most important aspect, especially with the range of styles and aesthetics that are out there, it allows for a lot of freedom and versatility.

Where can students shop for new Fall 2025 staples and statements? Since a lot of the inspiration is based in vintage aesthetics and trends; vintage and antiques stores could have a lot of statement pieces that will stand out. Additionally, thrift stores whether they are online like Depop or Poshmark, or local thrift stores; this can be affordable, sustainable and can help to find interesting statements or even staple pieces. Flea markets and vintage or thrift pop ups can also be a fun activity to do with friends as well as a good way to find unique, vintage pieces to add to the wardrobe this Fall.

Glamour Magazine’s article “11 Major Fall Fashion Trends Our Editors Are Buying for 2025,” stated that Fall 2025 fashion will entail an “Eclectic take on minimalism”. Which makes sense with the mix of all of the vintage inspired trends mixed with the added freedom and versatility of today’s fashion. With fashion “rules” looser than ever, this is a time to have fun and experiment with personal styles, layers, mixing and matching decades and aesthetics. Fashion this fall is a blend of past and present that can be integrated to shape a unique and individual personal style.
