Students: What to Bring to Orientation

  • Face Mask (Optional)
  • Pillow and a sleeping bag or sheets and blanket (Twin XL)
  • Casual clothing
  • Sneakers or walking shoes are highly encouraged (please avoid wearing flip-flops)
  • Rain gear/umbrella
  • Toiletries, towel & washcloth, soap, shampoo, etc. (includes medications)
  • Bath/shower towel and washcloth
  • Small amount of money for souvenirs or snacks
  • Unexpired state identification card or driver’s license
  • A Negative COVID test Result (At-home test, rapid test, or PCR test is accepted)

NOTE: Make sure to check the weather forecast before heading to Charlotte, as the weather (and temperatures) can fluctuate during our Summer sessions.

Summer Orientation: Overnight Accommodations

  • All students, including commuters and transfer students, stay overnight in our residence halls during the two-day Orientation.
  • Overnight accommodations are NOT provided to guests or family members of students attending orientation. A student may bring two guests or family members to the New Student Orientation Summer Session. The guests or family members must be registered by the student when signing up for Orientation. Students with Accommodation Requests

  • JWU is dedicated to providing accommodations to give students with learning disabilities, physical challenges, and chronic medical conditions the opportunity to succeed in their academic pursuits. Please indicate on the registration site your accommodation(s) request.
  • PLEASE NOTE: All requests for special accommodations must be submitted no later than two weeks prior to your arrival on campus for the orientation session you have selected. Participation

All students are required to participate in ALL activities of the orientation session and abide by the Student Code of Conduct, as outlined in the Charlotte Student Handbook. If you encounter extenuating circumstances that prevent you from attending Orientation, contact us at 980-598-1880 to discuss your situation.

Alcohol or Drug Use

Alcohol and drugs of any kind are prohibited from Johnson & Wales University. During your stay at JWU, you are expected to abide by the university’s alcohol and drug policies, which prohibit you from possessing and/or consuming alcohol or other drugs. Violations of these policies will be referred to Campus Safety & Security and/or the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. In addition, violations will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct for immediate action. Any violation of the Code of Student Conduct could result in the rescinding of your acceptance to the university.

JWU: A Tobacco-Free Campus

Johnson & Wales University Charlotte is proud to be a tobacco-free campus which fosters a healthy learning and working environment. Tobacco-related products include cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, blunts, pipes, bidis, hookahs, chewing tobacco, dip, smokeless tobacco, snuff or any other items containing or reasonably resembling tobacco or prohibited products.

1. When does Day 1 Start?
• Check-in starts at 8AM- 9 AM. Our Program Starts At 9 AM.

2. When does Day 2 end?
• At Approx. Noon.

3. Where will the student be staying?
• You will be staying in Cedar Hall North.

4. Will Parents Be Housed at orientation?
• Parents and families will NOT be housed on campus and must make their own
hotel accommodations while attending orientation.

5. Where will we be parking?
• You will be parking in parking lot D (Parking Deck).

6. How can I submit my medical information
• Go to jwu.medicatconnect.com and enter your JWU login

7. What Should I wear?
• Casual Clothing
• Sneakers or Walking Shoes
• We will provide a JWU t-shirt for students to wear on Day 2

8. What Are the Covid Restrictions?
• Students staying overnight will have to produce a NEGATIVE COVID test. The test must be from 72 hours before arrival. Please bring the physical test to the Orientation check-in.
• Masks are optional for all students/guests
• Any student/guest experiencing symptoms should remain home.
• Any questions about COVID accommodations or exemptions can be answered via Health Services

9. How do I Inform New Student Orientation of an Accommodation request for myself or a
guest I am registering?
• JWU is dedicated to providing reasonable accommodations to give students with
learning disabilities, physical challenges, and chronic medical conditions the
opportunity to succeed in their academic pursuits. Please indicate on the
registration site your accommodation(s) request.

10. Do I need to take my Placement test at orientation?
• The exam is completely done online over the summer, preferably before you
attend summer NSO. However, there is an opportunity for you to take your
placement test at NSO!
