A week of events planned by the sports, entertainment, and event management department… It just makes sense! Here at Johnson & Wales University, the SEEM (sports, entertainment, and event management) Department under the College of Hospitality is full of college students who are young professionals looking to gain experience in their prospective field of sports, entertainment or events. One way students at JWU have gained this experience is through classes that allow for real hands-on opportunities. SEEM Week is historically a 3-day series of events produced by the department, consisting of the SEEM Leadership Conference, SEEM Leadership and Management Expo and a Concert, which has a different theme every year.
This year was the 11th Annual SEEM Leadership Conference. The theme was a new Era, and with that came a new era of leadership, speakers and experience to be shared and gained. The conference is broken up into three sessions. The first session was a keynote, and delivered by Aaron Lampkin ‘13, and was moderated by Emily Peters. The second session was a panel titled the SEEM Professional of the Year Panel, which had the slogan “Beyond the Experience– Alumni Shaping the Future of SEEM”. The SEEM Professional of the Year Panel featured Hamilton Cook ‘10, Steven Tiller ‘12, and Elizabeth Craighead ‘09- moderated by Will Jones. Lastly, there was the Professional/Business Owner Panel with the slogan of "Building Brands, Creating Impact". The Professional/Business Owner Panel featured Eric Moyal, Emily Murray, and Daniel Saldarini and was moderated by Lena Allie. This event kicked off the start of SEEM Week on a professional and inspiring note.
The Next Day was the SEEM Leadership and Management Expo. The SEEM Leadership and Management Expo featured 32 exhibitors, which exceeded their marketing efforts, stating that 25+ exhibitors would be there. The exhibitors ranged from the sports side to entertainment and, of course, events as well. This event was a great opportunity for students to engage with industry professionals and network, and some even got jobs or internships out of it.
The next day, the event turned its focus away from the business professional clothes and shifted gears into a concert. This year's concert was titled Bands in the Basement, and the theme was an indie grunge style. The one-day-only festival was produced right in the heart of the downtown campus, also known as Gaebe Commons, and featured three performances. The first performer was an artist named Arlo Mathews, then there was Milk Street, and the headliner was Kid’s That Fly. The festival was from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The excitement and energy were incredible to witness. This concert was an amazing way to wrap up SEEM Week 2025 with incredible music.
