Fifty Percent Terrible

Maggie Smith (poet) said

in her poem “Good Bones:”

“The world is at least

fifty percent terrible”

and while I can see

where she may come from,

I would like to counter with

another point of view:

one that the world

is far more good than bad

if your view expands

beyond humanity

Sunflowers, if they can’t

face the sun, will face

each other

Rats will help one another

escape a cage before

retrieving a snack, even if

it means they must share

Us humans think ourselves

so advanced

so above

other species on this Earth

our acts of good/bad

far more meaningful than

that of flowers and rodents

But in the grand scheme of things,

simply because we are “smarter”

does not mean we inherently

mean more to the cosmos

than the sunflower basking in the field

or the rat trapped in the cage
