To set up an appointment contact us at 401-598-1016
Counseling Services operates on a short-term treatment model. When a student schedules an initial appointment they will meet with a staff counselor to discuss their concerns and then work collaboratively with the counselor to develop an individualized care plan to address their current concerns. Actively enrolled students on the Providence Campus are eligible for up to 6 individual sessions per semester. To schedule an appointment students can either call the office at 401-598-1016 or come to the office in person, located on the 2nd floor of Wales Hall.
Counseling Services has a counselor on duty during business hours, so that students experiencing a mental health related emergency may be assisted immediately. If a student is in crisis and needs immediate support they can call or come directly into the office and ask to speak with the counselor on duty. Outside of business hours Counseling Services has an after-hours on-call service, ProtoCall Services. Students can access ProtoCall by calling Campus Safety & Security at 401-598-1103 or by calling directly to 1-888-222-4805. When a student engages with the after-hours on-call Counseling Services is notified about the contact and will follow up with the student the next business day.
Clinical Counselors are available to consult with students, faculty and staff, as well as parents and families who are concerned about the emotional well-being of a student. To request consultation please contact the office.
Counseling Services engages in various outreach educational programs throughout the year. Our primary program is a suicide prevention program called Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR). This training is available for students, faculty, and staff. For more information or to request training please contact our office.
Counseling Services is able to provide students with referrals to off-campus resources for long-term individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatry/medication management, psychological testing, and more intensive treatment options as needed. For assistance with referrals please contact the office.
Counseling Services observes a policy of confidentiality that conforms to federal and state law.
Counseling Services does not provide long term care, court ordered treatment, or counseling that is involved in litigation. Counseling cannot be mandated or required for students, however in life-threatening situations; authorities at JWU may require a safety assessment for a student.
