Who Knew This Would Be So Hard

When coming to Johnson & Wales, a top culinary school in the country, you would assume that you would be walking into a dining hall with delicious scents and many options. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Gone are the days of home-cooked meals that our families would make, and the familiarity of certain spices, flavors, and family recipes. Replaced are familiar brunch options, grab-and-go items, and fruit.

While the food at the school is filling and does its job, I find myself not only missing the food that my family would make, but also eating the meal with my family. Starting college is a hard thing for many people, and having to adjust to different food and people can be hard. Clearly food matters a lot to people here. It’s understandable how not having dishes that are important to people’s cultures, backgrounds, and families can be hard to get used to.

It’s a good thing Providence is known for its food. By simply taking a trip downtown on the Wildcat Wheels, you’re able to choose from a wide variety of options on what you want to eat. Not only are there bigger places with a louder vibe to choose from, but there’s also places tucked into quiet corners to choose from as well. While it can be hard to get used to this new food in the dining halls, there are plenty of places to go when you want a break from it.
